4/27 Game Recap (2-2 Tie)
Well done today players. We had a tough game against the Sparks and it could have gone either way for us, so I'm happy that the girls fought back to tie it in the end.
Kudos to Ruhi for scoring today. She only got to play up for a little while, but she made the most of it by scoring. Ruhi continues to play solidly anywhere on the field. Marlene made a great cross in front of the goal which Courtney had the option to shoot, but made an excellent decision to pass instead to Ruhi.
Christene made our second goal through persistence and great placement of herself and the ball (in the net). Way to go Christene!
We had several almost goals today by Akayla, Courtney, Maanasa, and Marlene (and probably a few I am missing). Shivani and Sammie both took turns playing all the way back on defense today which is not something they have had the opportunity to do much this season. Good job girls. Lindsay was all over the other team, especially at the outside mid position. Karsyn helped out on defense, and survived the day as the coach's daughter. :)
Jessica and Kelly each took turns in the goal. Jessica made several saves, and came so close to saving one that went in and it was almost at the expense of her head hitting the goal post. Whew! Kelly played solid on the field and in the goal. Her punts helped to move the ball upfield.
This week we will be working on long shots and shooting in general. We will also talk about "stepping to" players driving toward goal, and playing the ball in the air.
Our next game will be at Challenger on Saturday at 12:15pm. We will be playing the team we played for the first game, so the girls should be ready to play hard.
Go Devils!

Stanford Tournament Update
We will be taking one team of nine players to the tournament next Sunday (5/4). Unfortunately we will not be able to make two teams and take everyone, but we had to
have the commitment early on. Please make sure individual forms are submitted to Coach Sonya by Sunday (4/27). Forms will be delivered to the tournament coordinator after Sunday's game.
The tournament coordinator also mentioned that space where players rest between games is limited, so it's a good idea to stake out space WELL BEFORE the 8am check-in time (like 6am early!). She mentioned that some folks bring campers and stake out space the night before. The rest area will be located in the grove just east of Stanford Stadium. If you have small pup tents, it might be a good idea to bring them, so your child has a place for some down time between games. Fold up chairs sound like a must for the period during and between games.
Please also remember to bring sunscreen, snacks and plenty of fluids.
Game schedules will not be available until tournament day, but three games will be between 9am and noon, and three will be held between 2pm and 5pm.

4/26 Game Recap (2-0 Win)

Thought I would get in a quick recap of today's game before we go out and do it again tomorrow. And when I say do it again, I do mean win. :) Congrats to the
players on their 2 to 0 win today.
Parents may have noticed that we had some players in unique positions today. Based on the historical record of the team we played, I thought this would be a good day to mix things up a bit.
Of particular note today on the field was Courtney and Akayla's goals. I think that Courtney's was off a pass and I missed the person who assisted. Kudos to whomever that was. Akayla scored off an amazing pass from Marlene. Way to go Marlene!
A few other comments on girls who played out of their comfort zone today. Lindsay and Karsyn both had shots on goal from forward and mid positions. Christene and
Maanasa held down the defense for a good portion of the first half. Shivani played solid at every postition today.
Sammie and Jessica played at the mid positions and helped initiate several drives up the line.
Thanks to Courtney and Ruhi for playing goalie today. Ruhi had an another amazing game at defense the second half too.
Overall, the girls continue to amaze me with both their individual ball skills and their ability to put plays together as team.

Announcement: Stanford Tournament
A lot of "game savvy" can really only be gained by playing a lot. Courtney's mom sent me information on a 4 v 4 tournament at Stanford on May 4th. I see this as a great opportunity for more play. We can have up to 6 on a roster. I would like to enter two teams. They play 6, 20 minute games. The tournament will run 8am to 5pm that day. Please let me know if you are available that day.
Please email coach Sonya if you are interested in playing. The entry deadline is 4/28.

4/19 Game Recap (5-1 Win)
Hi Parents and Players,
Congrats again on a very awesome game this week. The girls came together and played an amazing game. Some things are becoming second nature to the girls as a team which is great to see. They are creating opportunities by moving to an open space for a pass. What incredible passes they made during the game! As Kelly often points out to us, they also did the most important thing in soccer...they put the ball in the net five times! Courtney was our lead scorer with 3 goals. Hat Trick! Marlene scored 1 and Christene scored 1. Christene promised she was hungry for a
goal before she went in and scored. Marlene had several opportunities and her persistence payed off with a goal.
I am thrilled to see the scoring on our team spreading to several players. The girls did what we talked about in practice last week and followed their shots too. The offensive drives that the girls put together were picture perfect. Many times, the girls drove as a perfectly positioned unit. It is truly amazing me how well they are putting their offensive drives together.
Equally important to scoring is not letting the other team score. We have to give major kudos to Kelly for saving a sure goal when she was not even goalie. Marlene and Shivani both took turns in the goal this week too. We only allowed one in. Karsyn, Lindsay, Maanasa, and Ruhi anchored our defense throughout the game.
Our mids controlled the game in the middle, not allowing the other team to take possession and drive on us very many times. Kelly, Maanasa, Sammie, and Christene all helped to control the middle.
Ruhi and Shivani both had particularly good games. Shivani was very nervous about being in the goal, but she stepped up and played great. She came out the second half ready to go, and put together many plays and drives down the line. Ruhi played both offense and defense during the game, and she played equally great in each role. She made several crucialturn-arounds during the game.
Our game next week is at 11:30 at Rancho Middle School in Milpitas. The address is below. We are back to two practices this week.

4/12 Game Recap (3-1 Loss)
Congrats to our players on Saturday. While we did not come away with a win, we played a very physical team, and we played them tough. The game could have gone either way. Like last week, it took the girls a while in the first half to adjust to the style of play. We will talk a bit about strategies to defend against agressive play in the upcoming practices. I suspect we will see quite a bit more in the season. Welcome to the comp league. :)
Although it took the girls a while to find their footing in the game, I have continued to be impressed with their ability to turn the game around at any moment and put together an offensive drive. We had several opportunities in the first and second half of the game. At half time, we talked about coming on strong and not backing down. I set a two minute time line for our forwards, Kelly and Courtney, to score.
Kelly put one in at about the ten minute mark. I told her she was a little late. :) Kelly and Marlene both knocked the ball into the goal a few minutes later. We had many opportunities to score in the last few minutes, but just could not get one in. We need to continue to work on following shots on goal and playing positions, especially out wide at the mid positions.
Thanks,
Coach Sonya (and Coach Brad)

4/5 Game Recap (2-0 Win)
Hi Devils Parents and Players,
For those of you who know me from the rec league, you know that I usually do a recap of the games. I am not sure that I will be able to be as consistent this season, but I have to write something about the amazing first game we had in the comp division.
In the first few minutes of the game, it looked like it might be a long game for us, but the girls found their bearings, settled down, and played soccer. Thanks to Christene and Sammie for taking the first two shifts as goal tenders. We do not have a designated goalie on the team, so all the girls should expect to have a turn.
Kelly's two goals were amazing. The first was a high boomer in the corner of the goal. Thanks to Courtney for making a very "heads up" play on the second goal, Kelly scored off of Courtney's perfect pass on an indirect kick. Way to listen to last minute directions girls!
Although I moved the girls around quite a bit, of special note was the middle of the field being controlled by Maanasa, Shivani, Lindsay, Akayla, Kelly and Jessica. Several offensive drives were made with Courtney, Marlene, Akayla, and Lindsay. Our defensive specialists were Karsyn, Ruhi, Jessica, Maanasa and Lindsay.
I saw many good things happening on the field in general. The girls are looking up and making nice passes. They are taking on players one on one and taking the ball away. They are making throws down line to a forward positioned on the line. They are supporting each other on offensive drives. I am not sure if you noticed, but we had at least one other player running with the player driving toward the goal almost everytime. Considering the girls are learning the off-side rule, they did quite well not getting caught off.
Things that we will continue to work on will be holding our positions, especially on the left and right mids. We also need to work on our forwards not coming too far back. We will also work on following every shot on goal as well as moving toward the ball to meet the pass.
Our next game will be Saturday at 3:15pm at the SASC soccer complex. I would like the girls to be at the complex ready to warm up at 2:45pm. Please be on time.
Thanks Ruhi and family for bringing snacks. If you are not sure what to bring for snacks, generally, we have a fruit at halftime, and then, a snack and drink at the end of the game. I am also asking that the snack person brings ice and baggies to the game in case we have any injuries.
I do not currently have any ice packs in the first aid kit for practice. If you have any of the kind that you pop to activate, please send one to practice to put in our bag.
Thanks parents for all of your support.
