Saturday Soccer

Hi Devils (& Parents)

Coach Sonya will be holding an OPTIONAL Saturday Soccer practice this Saturday (1/10) from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at West Valley Elementary in Sunnyvale. This is the same location that regular practices were held last year.

A majority of the hour will be spent simply scrimmaging, in order to keep those soccer skills sharp. This is a very informal practice and is open to all. That includes moms and dads. So if you're interested in kicking the ball around, dig those cleats out of the garage and we'll see you on Saturday.

For those that don't know where West Valley is (1635 Belleville Way. Sunnyvale, CA 94087), here is a [map]

Devils keep rolling in Jaguars scrimmage

DSC_1720
The Devils returned to the field where it all started on Saturday afternoon in a friendly scrimmage with the CV Jaguars, a Group A team from the Delgado Tier 3 pool. It was only last spring when the Devils defeated the Jaguars in their first game as an organized competitive team, winning 2-0 against the same Jaguars. That would be the only game the Jaguars lost during the spring season, which elevated them to Group A.

This time, the game was an opportunity for both teams to stay focused during a long break in between regular league games. The Devils turned in another strong performance, in the modified contest, which featured three 25-minute running periods.

The Devils coaching staff also used it as an opportunity to rotate the girls through all positions. This provided everyone with a chance to show their stuff in areas they don’t normally play.

After a scoreless initial period, the rotations began to open things up. Marlene would break the ice with a breakaway goal three minutes in. Shivani setup the goal with a pretty lead pass from the right mid position. Drawing a defender away from the center full spot, she feathered a pass up the slot to Marlene, who slipped a shot past the Jaguars goaltender.

With the confidence of that early goal, the Devils began to press more on offense. Another breakaway chance was thwarted four minutes later when a whistle sounded on a neighboring field just as Courtney slipped past two Jaguars defenders at the top of the box. Thinking play had been whistled dead, all three players slowed down. When the referee indicated that play was still live, the goaltender cleared the ball to safety.

Courtney would exact some revenge with two minutes to play in the period. After the Devls defense pushed the ball up the right sideline, Courtney streaked up the line, then drew the goaltender out to defend the right side of the net. Displaying great patience, Courtney then sent a crossing shot that slipped inside the left post for the 2-0 lead.

Ruhi, Christene, Karsyn, Lindsay and Jessica teamed up to anchor a stingy defense which allowed few scoring chances.

The Jaguars would score in the 3rd period on a break after Karsyn misread the line a Jaguar forward was taking.

The momentum could have easily shifted back to the Jaguars, but Audrey, Kelly and Ruhi kept the ball in the Jaguars zone for a stretch of about 4 minutes with great ball handling near the right corner. This setup multiple corner opportunities, and several Jaguar goal kicks.

Marlene would push the Devils lead back to two goals by sending in a shot from 45-feet that tucked just inside the left post.

The scrimmage ended as a success, keeping the Devils momentum rolling and building on the girls confidence

The day was capped off with a couple notables. Each player presented a Jaguars player with a treat bag after the game as a thank you for hosting the scrimmage. Special thanks to Judy C. the Devils Team Manager for arranging the gifts. Karsyn also celebrated her 9th birthday with a round of cupcakes, that were in the words of her brother Ryan, “jy-nan-tic”!

Gryphons scrimmage a success

DSC_1259
Scrimmaging against an unknown team on Friday night, the Devils had a chance to keep in tune, rather than go three consecutive weeks without playing against a live opponent. The girls held their own during the regulation event at the Sunnyvale Soccer Complex.

The San Andreas Youth Soccer Gryphons (San Mateo) trekked down from the peninsula in their team bus (yes, I said team bus), which got the attention of the Devils. The Gryphons pre-scrimmage drills also got the attention of the Devils who may have been a little intimidated by the whole thing.

When the opening whistle sounded however, the Devils were all business. The coaching staff used the event as an opportunity to move players around to positions they may not be totally comfortable with, in order to get those players more experience in the event they need to fill in at those spots.

The Devils played remarkably well, given many had not played against live competition at those off-positions before.

The first half was limited to a single Gryphons goal (which should have been called off-side), but Marlene and Shivani played impressively on the back line to keep the Gryphons from scoring on several chances early in the half.

The Devils opened the 2nd half with a goal when Audrey raced up the right wing from the center line and punched home a 25-foot rocket that sailed into the left corner of the net.

Things turned sour, when a Gryphon forward got a little aggressive on a play in the box. The Devils goaltender, Lindsay, scooped up a shot that fell short, but was knocked over by a Gryphon forward. The shin guard of the Gryphon player hit Lindsay in the head, leaving a bruise.

Tough as nails, Lindsay stayed in the game, but the ensuing goal kick landed right on the boot of a Gryphon player. With a one step toward the net and a big shot, the Gryphons re-took the lead.

Ruhi almost converted on a breakaway 4 minutes later, but a Gryphons defender just got back in time to disrupt the shot. The ball dribbled clear of the net, but Kelly intercepted a pass to midfield and punched a shot that rang off the right post.

The Devils also narrowly missed on a beautiful corner kick from Marlene that sailed over the first line of defense, right to Ruhi’s boot. The Gryphons collapsed three defenders in the box to snuff out the scoring chance.

The Gryphons would add another goal later in the period after working the ball up the left side and chipping a shot off the goaltender’s glove.

Audrey would strike again with 3 minutes to play on a carbon copy of her first goal. Taking a centering pass along the right side line, she raced past the Grypons defense, then sent another laser past the Gryphons goaltender.

Two more late scoring chances by the Devils were turned aside late, after Sammie made two steals along the right sideline, setting up long range shots. Jessica and Christene also played very well in defensive situations, utilizing back passing exceptionally well. This was a focal point during practice the previous week, so it was great to see the fundamental applied in a game situation.

The event turned out to be a great success for both teams. Practice is no substitute for game experience, so getting the girls out and into a game situation was a great way to help maintain the momentum that they’ve built over the first three weeks of the season.
